Pakhtusov, Petr Kuz’mich
Born 1800 in Kronstadt; died Nov. 7 (19), 1835, in Arkhangel’sk. Russian navigator and hydrographer. Pakhtusov graduated from the navigation school in Kronstadt in 1820. From 1820 to 1832 he took part in hydrographic work on the Pechora River, the Barents and White seas, and Kolguev Island. In 1832 and 1833 he headed an expedition to Novaia Zemlia, in the course of which he described the southern and eastern coasts of Iuzhnyi Island. In 1834 and 1835 he led an expedition that resulted in descriptions of the eastern shores of Severnyi Island of Novaia Zemlia, the Matochkin Shar strait, Pankrat’ev Island, and the Gorbov Islands. A mountain range on Spitsbergen and islands in the Kara Sea are named after Pakhtusov; a monument was erected to him in Kronstadt in 1886.
