Pal, Bepin Chandra

    0.01 sec.
Pal, Bepin Chandra

Born 1858; died 1932. Member of the Indian national liberation movement; journalist.

As a young man, Pal was a schoolteacher and an advocate of the ideas of the Brahmo Samaj society. In 1886 he joined the Indian National Congress, and at the beginning of the 20th century he became one of the leaders of its radical wing (extremists). During the upsurge of the national liberation movement between 1905 and 1908, he developed the idea of creating an independent and economically self-sufficient federated republic of Indian peoples. He advocated a mass political struggle against English rule and supported the emerging workers’ movement in India. During World War I (1914–18) he played an active part in the struggle for self-government and supported the home rule movement.
