Paléologue, Maurice Georges 

Born Jan. 13, 1859, in Paris; died there Nov. 21, 1944. French diplomat.

Paléologue began serving in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1880. From 1880 to 1886 he held diplomatic posts in Morocco, Italy, and China, and from 1907 to 1912 in Bulgaria. From 1912 to 1914 he was director of the political department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While ambassador to Russia (1914–17) he succeeded in getting the maximum military effort from Russia as an ally of France in World War I. In 1920 he served as secretary-general for foreign affairs. In 1928 he was elected a member of the French Academy. He wrote his memoirs.
