Palade, George E. (Emil) (1912– ) cell biologist; born in Jassy, Romania. He practiced medicine and taught anatomy in Bucharest (1933–45), then came to the U.S.A. to join Rockefeller University (1946–73). There he made major advances in electron microscopy of cellular organelles, then began his landmark investigations of cellular protein synthesis and enzyme secretion. At Yale (1973–90), he pursued research in cell membrane physiology. He became a dean and a professor in residence at the University of California: San Diego (1990). His many awards include sharing the 1974 Nobel Prize in physiology for his description of cellular protein chemistry.
