This is about two to 10 times larger than the central value of observed warming over the 20th century and the projected rate of warming is very likely to be without precedent during at least the last 10,000 years, based on paleoclimate data.
Deep-sea sediments, lake sediments, coastal deposits, tropical corals and polar ice can yield climate proxies for paleoclimate based on isotopes, pollen, and geomorphology; late Quaternary data are highest quality and most relevant for this purpose.
Vrba lays out the case for the idea in two chapters in Paleoclimate and Evolution, with Emphasis on Human Origins (Yale University Press), which came out this spring.
