Palibin, Ivan Vladimirovich
Born Mar. 28 (Apr. 9), 1872, in Tbilisi; died Sept. 30, 1949, in Leningrad. Soviet botanist. Doctor of biological sciences (1934); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1946). Palibin attended the University of Geneva. Beginning in 1895 he worked at the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden (later the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR), where he organized a department of paleobotany in 1932. He was the director of the Batumi Botanical Garden from 1916 to 1923. Palibin made expeditions to study the flora of Northern China, Mongolia, the islands of the northern Arctic Ocean (on the icebreaker Ermak), the Caucasus, and Asia Minor. His principal works were on the taxonomy and geography of woody plants; on the extant flora of eastern Asia, Transbaikalia, and the Caucasus; and on the Tertiary flora of the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, and the Far East.
