Palmer, John McAuley (1817–1900) soldier, U.S. senator; born in Scott County, Ky. A lawyer who helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, he commanded a Union division at Stones River (Murfreesboro) (1862) and Chickamauga (1863). In a long postwar career, he served as Republican governor of Illinois (1868–72) and later, as a Democrat, in the U.S. Senate (1891–97). He ran for president as a minor party candidate in 1896.
