Palo Alto, city, California

Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries. A local attraction is "El Palo Alto," a tree that is more than 1,000 years old. Nearby Stanford is the seat of Stanford Univ.

While the immediate cause of the war was the U.S. annexation of Texas (Dec., 1845), other factors had disturbed peaceful relations between the two republics.

Palo Alto 

a city in the USA in western California, south of San Francisco Bay. Population, 56,000 (1970). Palo Alto has radioelectronics and food-processing industries. It is a major scientific center. Stanford University is located in Palo Alto. The city was founded in 1891 as a university town.
