In north-central TX, west of Fort Worth; organized Aug 27, 1856 from Navarro County. Name Origin: From Spanish for 'painted tree,' but connotation is unclear.

Area (sq mi): 985.50 (land 952.93; water 32.57). Pop per sq mi: 28.80.
Pop 2005: 27,478. State rank: 95. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 7.90%. Pop 2000: 27,026 (White 82.00%; Black or African American 2.30%; Hispanic or Latino 13.60%; Asian 0.50%; Other 9.00%). Foreign born: 4.40%. Median age: 38.30.
Income 2000: per capita $15,454; median household $31,203; Pop below poverty level: 15.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,616-$23,409.
Unemployment 2004: 5.50%. Change from 2000: 1.10%. Median travel time to work: 24.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 35.10%.
