Pangaea: see continental drift continental drift, geological theory that the relative positions of the continents on the earth's surface have changed considerably through geologic time. Pangeaor PangaeaHypothetical protocontinent proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912 as part of his theory of continental drift. Pangea (from Greek: pangaia, “all earth”) supposedly covered about half the Earth and was completely surrounded by a world ocean called Panthalassa. Early in the Jurassic Period (approximately 200 million to 146 million years ago), Pangea began to break apart. Its segments, Laurasia (composed of all the present-day northern continents) and Gondwana (the present-day southern continents) gradually receded, resulting in the formation of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Pangaea [pan′jē·ə] (geology) A postulated former supercontinent supposedly composed of all the continental crust of the earth, and later fragmented by drift into Laurasia and Gondwana. Also spelled Pangea. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |

As the seafloor spread, Pangaea broke up and the continents began to drift apart, eventually assuming their present positions. One of the things I didn't expect was the complete Pangaea, the separation of everybody," said Betti, now a tax consulting manager at Ernst & Young. |
