Panmunjom, officially Panmunjeom (păn'm njôm`), village, N South Korea. It lies south of the 38th parallel, the military demarcation line that partitions Korea. In the Korean War the truce negotiations, begun at nearby Kaesong Kaesong or Kaisong (both: kă`sŭng`), Jap. Kaijo, city (1993 pop. 334,433), S North Korea...... Click the link for more information. , were moved in Oct., 1951, to Panmunjom, where the truce was signed on July 27, 1953. The UN Command Military Armistice Commission is based there. Bleiker served as Chief of Office for the Swiss delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Panmunjom, and is now a reader in peace studies and political theory at the University of Queensland. On the same trip, I joined a USO tour of the DMZ at the truce village of Panmunjom. On 4 September the first UN prisoners were repatriated at Panmunjom and driven by ambulances across the Han River to Freedom Village, about 30 miles north of Seoul, South Korea. |
