Panofsky, Hans (Arnold) (1917–88) meteorologist; born in Kassel, Germany. His father, art historian Erwin Panofsky, brought the family to the United States in 1934. As a professor at Pennsylvania State University (1951–82), he won two of the highest honors from the American Meteorological Society, the Meisinger Award (1965) and the Rossby Medal (1976). A prolific author, he advanced the understanding of clear-air turbulence and the dispersion of air pollutants.
