Panofsky, Wolfgang K. H. (Kurt Hermann) (1919–  ) physicist; born in Berlin, Germany. He fled the Nazis' anti-Semitic policies in 1934 and entered Princeton. After working on the Manhattan Project (1941–45) he moved to the University of California: Berkeley (1945–51), then joined Stanford (1951–84). He made major contributions to studies of the subatomic particle pion using gamma-ray spectroscopy. He was a government adviser in the 1950s and 1960s and promoted nuclear arms control.
