Panteleev, Iurii Aleksandrovich 

Born Oct. 18 (31), 1901, in St. Petersburg. Soviet naval officer, admiral (1953), professor (1962). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Panteleev joined the navy in 1918 and saw service in the Civil War. He graduated from the advanced training courses for the command staff in 1925 and from the Naval Academy in 1933. He served in the Black Sea Fleet, in the Directorate of the Naval Forces of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army (1925–30), and as chief of staff and submarine force commander of the Black Sea Fleet (from 1935). He was chief of staff of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet from 1939 to 1941. In the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), Panteleev was commander from October 1941 to April 1942 of the naval defense of Leningrad and the lake region and, at the same time, commander of the Leningrad Naval Base. In 1942–43 (until May) and from December 1943 to July 1944 he was assistant chief of the Naval Staff Headquarters. He took command of the Volga Military Flotilla in 1943 and the White Sea Military Flotilla in July 1944.

After the war, Panteleev served as chief of a directorate of the Naval Staff Headquarters. He was deputy chief of the Naval Staff Headquarters in 1947–48, head of the Naval Academy from 1948 to 1951, and commander of the Pacific Ocean Fleet from 1951 to 1956. From 1956 to 1960 he was head of the A. N. Krylov Naval Academy of Shipbuilding and Armament, and from 1960 to 1968, head of the Naval Academy. He retired in 1968.

Panteleev was awarded the Order of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Nakhimov First Class, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, two Orders of the Red Star, a British order, and various medals.
