Paraguaná PeninsulaPeninsula, northwestern Venezuela. Situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Venezuela, it has a low elevation, infertile soil, and a sparse population. It became important in the 1950s and '60s with the development of the petroleum industry. Pipelines lead from the oil fields to the large refineries on the western side of the peninsula, which is accessible to deep-draft tankers. How to thank TFD for its existence? | The world's largest-capacity oil refinery, the Paraguana Refining Complex in Venezuela, ships almost all its products of 940,000 b/d to the US East Coast. Meanwhile, Sinopec, another Chinese government-owned company, is pursuing a wide range of petrochemical joint ventures in Venezuela, including a large fertilizer plant in Zulia state, a major petrochemicals facility in gas-rich Sucre state, and a substantial stake in the giant Paraguana refining complex, Venezuela's main source of gasoline exports. The Paraguana Refining Complex: Combining the big oil refineries of Amuay and Cardon (see DT 19), the Paraguana Refining Complex (PRC) is to become the main centre for aromatics in Venezuela. |
