Paraguaná PeninsulaPeninsula, northwestern Venezuela. Situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Venezuela, it has a low elevation, infertile soil, and a sparse population. It became important in the 1950s and '60s with the development of the petroleum industry. Pipelines lead from the oil fields to the large refineries on the western side of the peninsula, which is accessible to deep-draft tankers. |

| The second major project completed in 1996 was the inter-connection of Amuay and Cardon refineries, both located on the Paraguana peninsula of Falcon state, to form the Paraguana Refining Centre (PRC). The waters of the Gulf of Venezuela and the nearby area of La Vela, off the east coast of the Paraguana peninsula, could hold up to 26 TCF (740 BCM) of natural gas, according to the government. It was to be constructed in the Paraguana peninsula in northern Venezuela. |
