Paranaíba (pərənīē`bə), river, c.500 mi (800 km) long, rising in W Minas Gerais state, Brazil. It flows generally westward through an agricultural region before joining the Rio Grande to form the Paraná Paraná, river, c.2,000 mi (3,200 km) long, formed by the junction of the Paranaíba and the Rio Grande, SE Brazil. It has the second largest drainage system in South America.

About 900 km long, the Paranaíba rises in the northern spurs of the Serra da Canastra and flows through the central part of the Brazilian Highlands through a deep valley, forming rapids and waterfalls. Its numerous tributaries provide it with an abundance of water. Turbulent freshets occur in the summer. The mean flow rate at the city of Itumbiara is 1,505 cu m per sec.
