Paranaguá (pərənəgwä`), city (1991 pop. 88,163), Paraná state, SE Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the port for Curitiba Curitiba (k rētē`bä), city (1996 pop...... Founded c.1600, the city has fine port facilities and has become increasingly important with the shift of coffee cultivation S from São Paulo state. | Brazil's Paranagua port announced new rules on the shipment of GMO soybeans after the Brazilian Supreme Court sided with a lower court, which ordered the port to lift its ban. Bandeirantes shelved a project to build a 26,000 square-meter warehouse in Paranagua, in the southern state of Parana, because of the sharp appreciation of Brazil's real in the second half of 2005. The main grain port of Paranagua will also receive investments. |
