Paredes, Américo (1915–  ) folklorist, educator; born in Brownsville, Texas. After 15 years as a journalist, he joined the University of Texas faculty to teach English and anthropology (1951–85) and direct the Folklore Center (1957–70). His work on Mexican and Mexican-American folk arts and artists includes Folktales of Mexico (1970), A Texas Mexican Cancionero (1976), and George Washington Gomez (1990).
