Parenago, Pavel Petrovich 

Born Mar. 7 (20), 1906, in Ekaterinodar, now Krasnodar; died Jan. 5, 1960, in Moscow. Soviet astronomer. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953).

Parenago graduated from Moscow University in 1929 and became a professor there in 1938. In 1922 he began a systematic study of variable stars and later developed a theory of light absorption in the interstellar medium. He discovered a number of regularities between various characteristics of stars and conducted research on the dynamics of stellar systems. Parenago received the F. A. Bredikhin Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1949. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and several medals.
