Paretsky, Sara (1947– ) writer; born in Ames, Iowa. She studied at the University of Kansas (B.A. 1967), and the University of Chicago (M.A. 1977; Ph.D. 1977). Based in Chicago, she was a publications manager for Urban Research Corporation (1971–74), a free-lance business writer (1974–77), and an advertising and direct mail marketing manager (1977–85). She is the author of many mystery novels featuring V. I. Warshawski, a female hard-boiled private investigator, as seen in Blood Shot (1988). She is the founder of Sisters in Crime (1987), a women's group that hopes to gain wider recognition for women mystery writers.
