Paridae

Paridae 

a family of birds of the order Passeriformes. The Paridae range in length from 7.6 to 20 cm. The conical bill is sometimes sharply pointed, and the nostrils are covered with small bristles. The plumage is soft. There are two subfamilies: Parinae (tits) and Remizinae. The latter is sometimes considered a family. The Paridae are widely distributed, except in Madagascar, South America, and Australia. For the most part, they are birds of forests and wooded areas. The Parinae nest in holes, and the Remizinae build enclosed spherical nests with an entrance on the side. The birds feed on insects, spiders, and seeds.

WITH reference to Mrs M Edwards' letter "Birds Left Suddenly" (Birmingham Mail, October 31), I think she should find herself extremely fortunate to have witnessed a coming and going, she says, of between 30 and 40 blue tits, Parus caeruleus belonging to the family Paridae, a truly enviable spectacle.
