Parran, Thomas (1892–1968) physician; born in St. Leonard, Md. In 1926, as chief of the division of venereal diseases in the U.S. Public Health Service, he laid the foundation for his campaign while Surgeon General (1936–48) against syphilis and other social diseases. He established and was dean of the graduate school of public health, University of Pittsburgh (1948–58), and he cofounded the World Health Organization. |
