Parrington, V. L. (Vernon Louis) (1871–1929) literary historian; born in Aurora, Ill. Parrington revolutionized the study of American literature by regarding literary works in the context of intellectual history, most influentially in his 3-volume Main Currents in American Thought (1927–30).
