A partial thyroidectomy is likely to be carried out only for a papillary or follicular cancer that is less than a centimetre in width - and technically still in T1 stage.
Thyroid sympathetic nerves also modulate slow phenomena such as compensatory thyroid growth after partial thyroidectomy.
However, while total or near-total thyroidectomy remains an important option in dealing with specific thyroid diseases, it is premature to proceed to widespread adoption of total thyroidectomy in lieu of partial thyroidectomy in thyroid disease.
