Particle Displacement

a displacement £ of an infinitely small part of the medium with respect to the medium as a whole as a result of the passage of a sound wave. The direction of particle displacement may or may not coincide with the direction of wave propagation, depending on the wave type. For all attainable sound intensities the particle displacement is ξ < λ, where λ is the wavelength of the sound wave.
