Freedom Party

(Strana Slobody; also Slovak Freedom Party), a political party in Czechoslovakia. The party was formed in 1946, when it broke away from the Slovak Democratic Party. First known as the Christian Republican Party; it united an insignificant part of the former Slovak petite bourgeoisie and a small number of clerical and professional employees and members of the intelligentsia, mainly Catholics. Until February 1948 the party leadership conducted a reactionary policy. During the events of February 1948 and immediately afterward, the leadership changed and party ranks were purged of reactionary elements. Operating within the Slovak Socialist Republic, the party is part of the National Front of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and supports the front’s program. It cooperates with the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and other parties in the building of socialism. It has representatives in the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the national state bodies of Slovakia. It publishes the newspaper Sloboda.
