Party of Liberation and Socialism

(PLS; Hizb al-Tahrir wa-al-Ishtirakiyya), a political party in Morocco; formed on the basis of the Moroccan Communist Party, which was founded in 1943. The party existed from 1968 to 1974. It proclaimed its purpose to be the creation of a socialist society in accordance with the national peculiarities of the country, the country’s sound historical and ideological traditions, and the laws of progressive social development. In 1969 the party was banned by the Moroccan government. From 1972 to 1974 it worked under semilegal conditions. The PLS leadership advocated an alliance with other patriotic forces of the country and the creation of a unified popular front with an anti-imperialist and antibourgeois character.

On Aug. 27, 1974, the creation (with the consent of the Moroccan authorities) of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) was announced.
