Pashkevich, Vasilii Vasil’evich
Born Dec. 29, 1856 (Jan. 10, 1857); died July 14, 1939. Soviet scientist, specialist in fruit growing. Doctor of biological sciences (1934); academician of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1935); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1935). In 1882, Pashkevich was awarded a master’s degree in the natural sciences from the University of St. Petersburg. Beginning in 1894 he worked in the agricultural department of the Ministry of Agriculture and State Property. From 1922 he worked in the Agricultural Committee in the department of applied botany and selection, which was reorganized in 1924 into the All-Union Institute of Applied Botany and New Crops and in 1930 into the All-Union Institute of Horticulture. In 1922, Pashkevich was made a professor at the Leningrad Agricultural Institute. His principal works were devoted to the study of varieties of apples and other fruits.
