On the northeastern border of NC, on Albemarle Sound; organized 1668 (prior to statehood) as a precinct of Albemarle County. Name Origin: For the Pasquotank River, which forms its eastern border; from the Indian word pask-etan-ki 'where the current [of the stream] divides or forks.'

Area (sq mi): 289.44 (land 226.88; water 62.56). Pop per sq mi: 168.70.
Pop 2005: 38,270. State rank: 61. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.70%; 1990-2000 11.50%. Pop 2000: 34,897 (White 56.40%; Black or African American 40.00%; Hispanic or Latino 1.20%; Asian 0.90%; Other 2.20%). Foreign born: 2.30%. Median age: 35.90.
Income 2000: per capita $14,815; median household $30,444; Pop below poverty level: 18.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,815-$22,266.
Unemployment 2004: 4.60%. Change from 2000: 0.10%. Median travel time to work: 22.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 22.90%.
