In northern NJ on the NY border, northwest of Newark; organized Feb 7, 1837 from Bergen and Sussex counties. Name Origin: For the Passaic River; its name is from a Delaware Indian term passaic or passajeek, variously translated as 'peace' or 'valley.'

Area (sq mi): 197.05 (land 185.29; water 11.76). Pop per sq mi: 2693.40.
Pop 2005: 499,060. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.00%; 1990-2000 7.90%. Pop 2000: 489,049 (White 51.50%; Black or African American 13.20%; Hispanic or Latino 30.00%; Asian 3.70%; Other 20.60%). Foreign born: 26.60%. Median age: 34.80.
Income 2000: per capita $21,370; median household $49,210; Pop below poverty level: 12.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $30,452-$32,003.
Unemployment 2004: 6.10%. Change from 2000: 0.40%. Median travel time to work: 26.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 54.50%.
