Passau, Treaty of (1552)
a treaty concluded in July and August in the city of Passau between the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V, and the Protestant princes headed by the elector Maurice de Saxe. It recognized the right to practice Lutheranism pending final resolution of the question of religion in the Reichstag and declared an amnesty for the leaders of the Schmalkaldic League. The Treaty of Passau laid the basis for the religious Peace of Augsburg (1555). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
