Passek, Vadim Vasil’evich
Born June 20 (July 2), 1808, in Tobol’sk; died Oct. 25 (Nov. 6), 1842, in Moscow. Russian writer, ethnographer, historian, and archaeologist. The son of a nobleman, Passek graduated from Moscow University in 1830. Between 1831 and 1834 he belonged to the circle of A. I. Herzen and N. P. Ogarev. His book Travel Notes of Vadim (1834) undertook to study the manners and inner life of the people in the spirit of N. A. Polevoi’s romantic historiography. Passek’s Essays on Russia (books 1–5, 1838–42), a popular science collection, dealt with history, archaeology, and ethnography. WORKSIn Russkie prosvetiteli, vol. 1.
