Pasternatskii, Fedor Ignat’evich 

Born Dec. 13 (25), 1845, in Igumen District, in what is now Minsk Oblast; died Aug. 7 (20), 1902, in the village of Piatevshchina, in what is now Minsk Oblast. Russian internist; one of the founders of balneology and heath-resort science in Russia.

Pasternatskii graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Kiev in 1871. From 1891 he was a professor at the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy. In 1907 he described a symptom of certain kidney diseases, Pasternatskii’s symptom, and proposed a method of palpating the kidneys. He was one of the first to study the Caucasus Mineral Waters region and the climatic features of the Black Sea Coastal region of Russia. He was the initiator and organizer of the All-Russian Exhibition of Hygiene in 1894 and the First All-Russian Congress on Climatology, Hydrobiology, and Balneology in 1898.
