Patch, Sam (?1807–29) stunt diver; born in Rhode Island. Accompanied on his travels by a fox and a small bear, he dived from cliffs, bridges, and ships' masts (1827–29). He became a figure of popular legend after his death from a jump into the Genesee River, near Rochester, N.Y.
