Paulo Afonso
waterfalls on the lower course of the São Francisco River in eastern Brazil. When the São Francisco emerges from the Brazilian Highlands onto the Atlantic Plain, it rushes down a coastal rise, forming a series of waterfalls and rapids measuring 84 m. The mean flow rate is approximately 3,000 cu m per sec. There are a number of large hydroelectric power stations near the falls, including the Paulo Afonso station (1.1 million kilowatts).
