Pau (pō), city (1990 pop. 83,928), capital of Pyrénées-Atlantiques dept., SW France, at the foot of the Pyrenees. It is a major year-round tourist center, renowned for its spa and winter sports, as well as its scenery. It has metallurgical and wool industries, and aeronautical equipment, shoes, and clothing are manufactured. Founded in the 11th cent., it became the capital of Béarn Béarn , former province, SW France, in the Pyrenees. It is now the inland part of Pyrénées-Atlantiques dept. Its valleys are well cultivated, and cattle are bred. Pau replaced Orthez as the capital in the 15th cent.

a city in southwestern France and the capital of the Department of Basses-Pyrénées. Population, 76,000 (1968). Railroad junction on the line to Spain by way of the Puerto de Somport. Pau has machine-building, food-processing, textile, and footwear industries.
