Voinarovskii, Pavel Dmitrievich 

Born Feb. 3 (15), 1866, in Sevastopol’; died June 13 (26), 1913, in St. Petersburg. Russian electrical engineer.

Voinarovskii graduated from the Technical School of the Postal-Telegraph Department in St. Petersburg in 1890. Starting in 1894 he taught and later became a professor at the St. Petersburg Electrical Engineering Institute (from 1906 to 1912 he was the director). In 1895 he drew up plans for a telephone line from St. Petersburg to Moscow, which was constructed in 1898 and was one of the major trunk lines of that time. Voinarovskii’s work on the problems of electrical energy transmission over aerial and cable lines was of great importance. In 1901 he produced calculations for the operating temperature conditions of wires and cables, and in 1903 he compiled an atlas of drawings and figures indicating the various methods of laying cables. In 1912 he put forth the first theory of electrical cables.
