Zagrebel’nyi, Pavel Arkhipovich 

Born Aug. 25, 1924, in the village of Soloshino, Poltava Oblast. Soviet Ukrainian writer. Member of the CPSU since 1960.

Zagrebel’nyi fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. He graduated from the University of Dnepropetrovsk in 1951. He was first published in 1949; his first collection, Kakhovka Stones (with lu. Ponomarenko as coauthor), appeared in 1953. He has published volumes of short stories, including Flowers of the Steppe (1955) and Novellas of the Sea Coast (1958); the narrative tales The Mirage (195.6) and Thought of the Immortal (1957); and the novels Europe 45 (1959), Europe: The West (1961), Day for the Future (1964), Marvel (1968), From the Point of View of Eternity (1970), and Turning to Love (1971). For the most part his prose works, which have intriguing plots, are devoted to contemporary life; in many of his works the heroic events of the war years are portrayed. In 1961-62, Zagrebel’nyi was editor of the news-paper Literaturna Ukraina. He has been awarded two orders and a medal.
