Zdrodovskii, Pavel Feliksovich 

Born May 4(16), 1890, in Ural’sk. Soviet microbiologist and immunologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1945). Hero of Socialist Labor (1970).

Zdrodovskii graduated from the University of Kazan in 1914. He became a professor at the university in Baku in 1926. From 1922 to 1930 he served as organizer, scientific supervisor, and director of the Azerbaijan Institute of Microbiology and Hygiene in Baku. He worked in the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine from 1930 and in the Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR from 1945. His main research has been concerned with malaria and tropical diseases, rickettsioses, immunology and epidemiology of brucellosis, and general immunology. Methods of prophylactic vaccination of human beings with live attenuated vaccine against brucellosis and rickettsioses and methods of preventive vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, and intestinal infections were developed under the direction of Zdrodovskii. He discovered the phenomenon of nonspecific allergy-hemorrhagic parallergy. He is studying the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and immunological processes from the general physiological standpoint of reactivity of the organism. He has received the State Prize of the USSR (1949), Lenin Prize (1959), and the Mechnikov Gold Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1967). Zdrodovskii has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and medals.
