Pavel Zhilin

Zhilin, Pavel Andreevich 

Born Mar. 5 (18), 1913, in the village of Vorob’evka, in what is now Buturlinovka Raion, Voronezh Oblast. Soviet military historian; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968); lieutenant general (1968); member of the CPSU since 1942.

Zhilin graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1946. He was deputy editor in chief of Voenno-istoricheskii zhurnal from 1958 to 1964 and prorector of the Academy of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1964 to 1966. He has been head of the Institute of Military History of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR since 1966. His main works include The Defeat of the Turkish Army in 1811 (1952), The Counteroffensive of the Russian Army in 1812 (1953), How Fascist Germany Prepared the Attack on the Soviet Union (1965), and The Defeat of the Napoleonic-Army in Russia (1968). Zhilin received the State Prize of the USSR in 1952 and has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, two Orders of the Red Star, and various medals.
