Pavlov, Aleksandr Vasil’evich 

Born Dec. 10 (22), 1880, in Odessa; died Aug. 14, 1937. Soviet military leader, division commander (1935). Son of an office worker.

Pavlov joined the army in 1914. He graduated from a school for ensigns in 1915 and served in World War I as a lieutenant. After the October Revolution of 1917, Pavlov became a member of the revolutionary committee of the Seventh Army and fought against the troops of the Central Rada. In the Civil War of 1918–20, he commanded a regiment, a brigade, and the 27th Rifle Division on the Eastern Front. He was commander of the Tenth Army from December 1919 to July 1920. Pavlov successfully commanded troops in the rout of Denikin and in the supres-sion of the Antonov revolt. After the war, Pavlov served as inspector of the infantry of the armed forces of the Ukraine and the Crimea, commander of a corps, and assistant commander of the forces of several military districts. In 1930 he became assistant inspector of the infantry of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army and head of a department and assistant chief of the M. V. Frunze Military Academy. He was awarded two Orders of the Red Banner.
