Pavlov, Vsevolod Vladimirovich 

Born Jan. 20 (Feb. 1), 1898, in Putivl’; died Feb. 16, 1972, in Moscow. Soviet art historian and Egyptologist. Doctor of art history (1944). Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1962).

Pavlov graduated from Moscow State University in 1929 and taught there from 1931 to 1971. From 1929 to 1962 he worked at the A. S. Pushkin Fine Arts Museum. Pavlov analyzed the main stylistic principles of ancient Egyptian art, establishing their relationship to the Egyptian social order and religious beliefs. He also dealt with the cultural interrelationships of the peoples of the ancient world and problems of attribution.
