In central KS, west of Great Bend; established Feb 26, 1867 from Rush and Stafford counties. Name Origin: For an Indian tribe of Caddoan linguistic stock. Name may mean 'horn' for the shape of their hair lock; Osages called them Pa-in 'long-haired,' they called themselves 'civilized people.'
