pay TV

pay TV
(1) A pay-per-view TV service that charges the viewer a fee for each movie, show or event, whether delivered immediately (see video-on-demand) or at a scheduled time.

(2) A TV service from a cable, satellite or telephone company that charges the viewer a monthly fee for a package of channels. There may be additional charges for sports events or on-demand movies (definition #1).

The reality of the strong competition between pay TV and free-to-air TV was recognised by the Competition Commission in its recent report on Sky's investment in ITV plc.
Half of what they watch is pay TV programming; the rest of the time they're tuned into broadcast channels like everybody else, albeit without needing a rabbit-ears antenna.
