Payró, Roberto Jorge

Born Apr. 19, 1867, in Mercedes; died Apr. 5, 1928, in Buenos Aires. Argentine writer. Member of the Socialist Party.

Between 1907 and 1923, Payró was in the diplomatic service in Belgium and Spain. Well known are his novella Laucha’s Wedding (1906), the humorous chronicle Tales of Pago Chico (1908), and the novel The Amusing Adventures of the Grandson of Juan Moreira (1910). These realistic works, notable for their vivid national color, are directed against bourgeois democracy. Payró also wrote historical novels and realistic dramas.
