Paysandú
a city in Uruguay and capital of Paysandú Department. Population, 60,000 (1967). Paysandú’s port, situated on the left bank of the Uruguay River, is accessible to oceangoing vessels. Linked by railroad and highway with Montevideo, the city has a meat-packing industry that produces canned and dried meats. It also has a shipyard and a fishing industry. Paysandú was founded in 1772.
