Pear Flower Bud Weevil
(Anthonomus pyri), a beetle of the weevil family (Curculionidae), a pest of pear and apple trees. Its body is 4.0–5.5 mm long, and its color is cinnamon to chestnut brown; it has a transverse band of dense white hairs on its elytra. The larva is 5–6 mm long and is white with a brown head. The insect is found in Europe; in the USSR it is a pest in the southwest. The beetles lay their eggs in the autumn in the fruit buds. The larvae hibernate; in the spring they eat the inside of the buds and pupate there. Control measures include shaking the beetles down onto screens when the buds blossom and treating the trees in the autumn with insecticides. [7- 1227- 1] Want to thank TFD for its existence?
