Pearson, Sir Cyril Arthur

Pearson, Sir Cyril Arthur (pēr`sən), 1866–1921, English publisher. He founded and directed the periodicals Pearson's Weekly, Pearson's Magazine, and The Lady's Magazine and the London Daily Express (1900). Eventually he controlled a number of newspapers in various English cities. An ardent supporter of Joseph Chamberlain's tariff-reform movement, he organized the Tariff Reform League in 1903. In 1910 he was forced to relinquish directing his newspaper interests because of failing eyesight. He devoted himself thereafter to the cause of the blind and founded St. Dunstan's training center for soldiers blinded in World War I. He wrote Victory over Blindness (1919).
