Name Origin: For the Pecos River, which forms its northeastern border. Believed to be the name of an Indian tribe now lost or unidentified, and to be a Spanish translation of a Keresan word meaning 'watering place.' Area (sq mi): 4764.73 (land 4763.66; water 1.07). Pop per sq mi: 3.30. Pop 2005: 15,859. State rank: 136. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.70%; 1990-2000 14.50%. Pop 2000: 16,809 (White 33.40%; Black or African American 4.40%; Hispanic or Latino 61.10%; Asian 0.50%; Other 19.20%). Foreign born: 13.50%. Median age: 31.20. Income 2000: per capita $12,212; median household $28,033; Pop below poverty level: 20.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $13,953-$15,955. Unemployment 2004: 6.20%. Change from 2000: 1.20%.
